Even though this is a recipe for pizza, I’m hoping the semi- healthiness of this recipe overcomes the extreme un-healthiness of the last post. Those cookie cups are pant busters but they are sure as heck delicious.
I love recipes like this because you can tailor them to your preferences and to whatever you have on hand:
1. Beef, sausage, or chicken would be equally delicious in this recipe
2. I used marinara sauce instead of pizza sauce because my pantry is looking a bit bare these days. Use what you have!
3. Feel free to add whatever seasoning you’d like to whatever meat you use… you choose!
The things I WOULD leave on this pizza are the bell peppers. The bell peppers are so delicious and they totally take this pizza to the next level. I might try to saute them or roast them next time. Roasted bell peppers are just about the best thing in this world.
We like things really spicy in our house so we added quite a bit of red pepper flakes at the end. Add as little or as much as you’d like… this pizza is totally up to you!
Spicy Turkey and Pepper Pizza (adapted from here)
1 Whole wheat pre-made pizza dough (in refrigerated aisle)
1 lb. lean ground turkey, browned
2-3 Tbsp. italian seasoning (any type seasoning would do!)
1/2- 3/4 cup pizza sauce (I used marinara sauce!)
1 cup reduced-fat mozzarella cheese
3/4 cup reduced-fat Italian 4-cheese mix
1/2 Red bell pepper, cut into thin strips
1/2 Yellow bell pepper, cut into thin strips
Red Pepper Flakes, to taste
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a rimmed baking sheet (I used a 13×9) with olive oil. Spread out the pizza dough to fill the baking sheet. Bake in oven for 8 minutes. While dough is pre-baking, brown the turkey in a medium sized pan on medium heat. Once turkey is browned, sprinkle with italian seasoning.
When dough is done pre-baking, spread pizza sauce on crust, leaving 1/2 inch border. Sprinkle half of the cheese onto the sauce. Top with the turkey, bell peppers, and remaining cheese. Bake in the oven again for another 6-8 minutes. Once pizza is done, remove from the oven and sprinkle the red pepper flakes on top, as much as desired. Cut into squares and enjoy!
