This wedding was in Smyrna, Georgia and there I witnessed two of the best people getting married. So much detail went into this wedding and it was a blast from start to finish.

First Fridays in the West Bottoms

14 Friday Sep 2012

antiques, kansas city

The words ‘First Fridays’ brings joy to many Kansas Citians’ ears, namely for the art studios, wine, and good times they’re guaranteed to bring. However, the words “First Fridays in the West Bottoms” is an even more joyful tune to the ears of Kansas City antiquers… particularly my mom and I.

Our first stop: an old school bus filled with vintage clothing. Snagged a $5 clutch/wallet!

My mom introduced me to this monthly event last weekend and I am forever changed. The West Bottoms is the old warehouse district in Kansas City. Many of the warehouses are now vacant or occupied by questionable inhabitants (we stumbled upon quite a few of them). Some of them are being used as Haunted Houses (so, naturally, I avoid them like the plague). BUT some of them are treasure troves: warehouses packed to the brim with antiques, home goods, and crafts. Basically, food for the soul.

Warehouses in the West Bottoms

One of the many flights of stairs we climbed on our way to finding treasures!

Vendors from around the area gather in the West Bottoms on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the month. They set up booths in the warehouse buildings, most of them being 3-4 stories tall (FILLED with vendors!). It’s an amazing sight to see… such beautiful pieces amongst the torn, ragged, beaten warehouse buildings of old Kansas City.

I want.

So many pretty things! Not enough time!

Every corner we turned, there would be a new jewel of a building to uncover. Floor after floor filled with everything you could imagine. I’m a ‘furniture, kitchen goods, decorative pieces’ antiquer whereas my mom is a ‘doll, toy, trinket’ antiquer. The fact that we both walked away with bags full of things means First Fridays in the West Bottoms is sure please anyone.

Furniture galore… can’t wait to decorate a home with items like this some day!

I think we ended up going to six or seven warehouses before they closed. We were desperate for something to drink halfway through so we decided to stop at a place that guaranteed “Ice Cold Drinks!”. It turned out to be a coffee shop/tobacco shop/hookah bar/ hang out spot for abandoned warehouse occupants. We definitely stood out like a sore thumb in that place but the waters and iced caramel lattes were totally worth it.

Mom photo bombed the picture.

Glass of wine while I browse lamp shades? Don’t mind if I do…

My treasures from the day: red vintage clutch, vintage pyrex bowl, striped straws, mercury glass candle holders, vintage green strainer, a masher, and vintage photos. Not too shabby!

I will always look back on last weekend as one of the best times my mom and I have ever had antiquing together. First Fridays in the West Bottoms was such a fun Kansas City adventure… it just might become a monthly ritual! Bring on the antiques!

My current literary obsession: Gone Girl
By: Gillian Flynn

20120906-064039.jpg

You will not be able to put this mystery/thriller/drama down. I highly suggest allotting some serious uninterrupted time for this– your to do list will be thrown out the window. This is all I am going to say, at the risk of ruining a single moment of this book for you.

Happy Reading (and probably rereading),

Erin

Chocolate Rainbow Sprinkle Cookies

chocolate, cookies, Good Eats

Do you ever have those days where you just want 5 cookies a cookie? Does that happen to be every day for you? Okay good we’re on the same page.

I’m a dessert gal. I’d take a cookie over a steak any day.  When I saw this recipe on pinterest, I knew I had to make it… and I knew I had to make them rainbow.

The fact that these are so easy to make and sooo delicious makes them utterly dangerous. Do not make these! They are addicting! You’ll be eating 5 before you know it! They are chocolately, crispy, melt in your mouth, delicious. And pretty to boot! I’m thinking the sliver sparkly sprinkles hanging out in my kitchen are next. Boy, do I have a weakness for all things pretty and yummy.

THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP: taste test a warm one right off of the pan.

Tad ate about 10 in one sitting after I made these. They didn’t last long in our house and I don’t think they’ll last long in yours… good lookin’ and scrumptious cookies have a way of disappearing!

Chocolate Rainbow Sprinkle Cookies (Adapted from here)- yields ~ 48 cookies

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 Large eggs
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/3 cup rainbow sprinkles (or any kind you prefer!)
8 oz. semisweet baking chocolate, finely chopped

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease baking sheets. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt, then set aside. Cream the sugars and butter together with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing until just combined. Add in the vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture, until just combined. Add in the chocolate and sprinkles, mixing by hand.

Drop by rounded tablespoons onto the baking sheets, about 1 inch apart. Bake for 14-16 minutes or until brown. Cool on the baking sheet for 1-2 minutes then transfer to a wire rack. Enjoy!

*The recipe ended up making a lot of dough… it would have yielded more cookies than I should probably allow myself in a week. SO, I decided to freeze a third of the dough to bake later. Below are some pictures of how I rolled the dough and froze it… makes perfectly round cookies to be thawed and baked in no time! (Thaw in the fridge overnight before baking)

Plop about 3 or 4 large scoops of dough onto a large piece of plastic wrap.

Pull both sides of the plastic wrap together and roll the dough between the plastic wrap until it starts forming a log.

Seal the sides together and then twist the ends, making sure the dough is in the shape of a log.

Wrap the dough again in foil to seal in all of the cookie deliciousness. Freeze until you’re ready for another round of cookies!

Thaw, cut, bake!

ENJOY!

Natalie

music

This song reminds me of getting on the road and heading West on 64, back to where I still call home. Windows down, latte in hand, mentally already home. However, home is really about who is there. The hugs waiting for you…This weekend I get a piece of that, traveling down south (not quite ol’ Kansas) to Georgia. Not only do I get to see two of my favorite people, my mom and dad, but I also get to see two wonderful people get married, Jessica and Robert. As an added bonus–I get to see the rest of my family coming in for the wedding. Love you all and cannot wait to see you!

Love,
Erin
