Good morning and happy Monday!!  Feels good to be back at it today, partnering up with The Ollie Swaddle to share some of our tips for establishing a nighttime routine!  It is important to note before I begin that every baby is different and what works for us may not work for you or your baby.

When we had E, our pediatrician shared a wise piece of advice with us that we have taken to heart on all things baby.  When establishing a routine of any kind, whether it be for sleep, eating, leaving the house, etc…it is important to stay consistent and only do what you know to be sustainable over a long period of time.  If reading 4,675 books or rocking them to sleep in your arms before bed is not something you are willing to sustain over a long period of time, don’t make it a part of the routine.  Whatever routine you establish: pacifiers, bottles, etc…to break it is going to take far more work than to establish it.  That being said, it can be difficult to keep this in mind when it is the only thing that seems to work and UGH JUST GO TO SLEEP.  On that note: When E got really sick for what seemed like months back when she was 12 months old, we let her have the pacifier whenever she wanted because it was the only thing that made her feel better so we undid the ‘just when sleeping’ routine that we had worked so hard on–SO if anyone has tips for nixing the pacifier…send them our way (UGH).

The following is the sleep routine that we started with E and C as soon as we got the go ahead from the pediatrician to let them sleep until she wakes up on her own versus waking to eat every 2-3 hours (i.e. back to birth weight).  That being said, you can do any of these things from the start, but just check with your pediatrician about letting them sleep versus waking to eat.

1. Swaddling:  A Velcro Swaddle is key.  We made it a point to only swaddle at night even when it felt tempting during the day.  The Ollie Swaddle is thin, but tight so you don’t have to worry about them breaking out or overheating.  The bottom is also accessible so you can do a diaper change without unswaddling.  We are so excited to use this with C as we had a hard time finding one that kept E in and that also wasn’t too small.  This one is big enough to really last as long as you want it to (just be sure to swaddle with arms out once they can roll over!)
2. Complete darkness at night.  Ok, this one is really tough because it means no turning on lights or TV when you get up for those feeds or diaper changes.  The darkness helps to establish that it is night which is especially important at the beginning when they are trying to sort their days from their nights.  I have a hard time staying awake especially in the beginning when the feeds can take almost an hour so I have to do a little phone so I turn the brightness way down and avoid it being near baby’s eyes.  I have also heard to leave blinds open/lights on for nap so they understand the difference, but I let the sitter establish this because she was with her 5 days a week at nap time.
3. A White Noise Machine  We started this pretty much right away and E still uses hers.  Ocean is her jam.  We will do the same sound with Claire and hope it works because it’ll be easier if they have to sleep in the same room when we travel.
4. Nursery Heater This was way important with E because she was born in the dead of winter and I was petrified she was going to freeze, but actually it’s been great for both kiddos because it regulates the temperature of the crib to whatever degree you set it.  So, if the crib gets too hot, it will blow cooler air as well.  So it’s on every night, year round and E is used to a very specific 72 degrees.
5. Lay them down awake.  I’ll admit there have been plenty of times where we broke this rule (looking at you, teething), but generally this was a practice that has lead to fairly stress-free bedtime.
6. Pacifier We chose to use a pacifier as a means of getting her to soothe herself to sleep.  Since we put her down awake and was swaddled, she didn’t have access to her hands, so she used a pacifier.  It meant getting up a few times a night to put it back in, but for us, that was a sustainable part of the routine versus her self soothing with her hands which we would have a hard time getting her to stop doing (and swaddling with hands in meant she slept in longer stretches).  We were sticklers that the pacifier only be used at night (she would pick out the binks she wanted out of her bink box and knew to put them back in the box when she woke up) and we were doing so well until she got a GI bug (TWICE), four molars at once, and then a double ear infection and double pink eye at the same time–all within about a two month window.  We threw our rule out the window and I know we made the right call at the time, but we were back to the pediatrician’s ‘I told you so’ and at 18 months we are having a hard time undoing the new ‘routine’ of not giving it up right away or needing it when she gets upset.  But, this aside, she still looks forward to playing with all of her pacifiers in bed and will sleep 12-13 hours without waking at night.

So those are the basics of what we do every night with the girls.  We really don’t do much more than that.  Each age bracket has its’ own unique add ons like now we brush E’s teeth and she cuddles up in her Big Girl Bed and we read one or two books.

What does your nighttime routine look like for you and your little ones?  Do you swaddle?  Use a pacifier?  I love hearing what others do!

Spring has sprung, people!  Here in Ohio, the temps have stayed at a fairly steady 60-70 degrees and the little person in our house is loving it.  I think there would be riots if there was even a hint of snow in the forecast.  With all the baby prep, spring kind of snuck up on me this year.  E loves to get outside and all of sudden I found that her plentiful wardrobe really didn’t contain many warmer temperature pieces.  I think we’ve finally reached the point in her life/growth that we have to actually shop every season.  Before, she just had tons of stuff that were a wide range fit (think 6-12 months) that we got at showers, hand me downs, or that I bought when I saw a good deal, etc…and I just mixed and matched to fit the season.  Now, she is growing like a weed and is now a healthy 2T.  Plus, last year she didn’t really play much outside so I could get away with less summer specific items.  She has a lot of sweatshirts and sneakers that fit, but she was lacking in sandals that fit, spring dresses, and short sleeves.  Leggings will make a great transition piece, but soon it will be all shorts all day!

There are so many great pieces out there for girls right now (and don’t worry boy mamas–I have a post coming next on toddler boys!) so let’s get to it!

1. Eleanor has these sunglasses in blue and they are by far my favorite thing ever.  She doesn’t keep them on long, but I think she’ll grow to love them like her bows which she now tries to put on herself. 🙂

2. These bows are seriously darling.  I also love her June and January knotted headbands.

3.  It’s still pretty chilly in the mornings and in the evenings so a jacket is a must.  This one would also double nicely as a rain jacket!

4. Off the Shoulder Top

5. This dress would be perfect with a cardigan and can be worn well into the summer.  I’m thinking this would be a perfect dress for Memorial Day and/or Fourth of July!  And at $13?!  It’s a steal.

6.  Love these linen shorts and these striped shorts, I actually kinda want them to come in my size?

7. E has these Native shoes in multiple colors and sizes.  They are the same texture as Crocs, but closed in which I think is great for this age!

8. Just ordered these rainboots in the next size E will need so they are ready to go when she outgrows her yellow Hunter boots!  Rainboots are solid gold in toddler world.

9.  I mentioned these sandals in last week’s favorite’s post and I cannot wait to get them!! Gah, baby toes!!

10.  A couple of weeks ago I also posted a roundup of Swimwear for the Littles!

Happy shopping and wahoo for warmer temps!!
Happy Wednesday!
Erin

Good morning!! In the last two years, I have been pregnant for a total of 70 weeks.  And somehow I have yet to write this post!  So, today I thought I would share a few of my essentials that have gotten me through!

Clothing: The simpler the better.  I have collected most of my items from generous friends who were done with babies so I have been lucky because buying seasonally appropriate items that fit for only 10 months can get ridiculous.  So, my advice is to go simple and buy things that you can mix or match so that you can wear them several times in new ways!  I also try to get things that I would wear after too like a baggier sweater or one that has slits down the side that can grow with you.  I also have the added constraint of thigh high compression hose.  Which by the way, I was reading one of my fave bloggers and she put a link to this video on how to actually put on compression hose.  I almost cried.  I have been putting them on incorrectly/painfully for almost 70 weeks so if you have to wear them, watch this!  So most of my outfits revolve around how to cover them up which is usually not cute especially when it warms up!  But overall, these four things are my staples along with a solid collection of leggings:
Olive Skinny Jeans
Maternity Tees
Long Cardigans
Boots

Sleep: At some point, probably early on, you are going to want to get yourself a a body pillow for between your legs while you sleep.  I know some people that have a lot of pain will invest in something more fancy, but again here I was hoping to get away with something that I could potentially use beyond pregnancy and a simple one from Target has worked out pretty well!

Vitamins:  I went pretty simple here too with just the Target Brand, but I also take these!

Oils and Lotions:  I chose to invest my money here versus the other three categories so far because the majority of my pregnancies have fallen in the cold/dry months so moisture is no joke because you are already itchy as it is.  Plus, compression hose aren’t exactly anti-itch.  I use all of these multiple times a day.
Belly Oil
Kiehl’s Creme de Corps
Refresh Oil
Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment

Food and Drink:  All of the things, but especially tea will be your new best friend.  I drink around 3-4 cups a day.

Other Random Things: Root Coverup has been a lifesaver because I am too tired to do anything in the first and third trimesters and my hair grows ridiculously fast as it is, plus add vitamins.  General fatigue is also why dry shampoo and Face Wipes are also staples around here.  Oh, and gum.  Gum is literally the only thing that keeps me from eating 24/7.

What else would you add?  What am I missing?  I still have ten weeks left and this is about the time my mind turns to complete mush so any ideas to help with that would be much appreciated!!

Have a great day!!
Erin

P.S. Don’t forget to get yourself entered to win a Re-Play Recycled Feeding Set!  Ends tonight!

Good morning!! Hope you have all had a great and hopefully short week!  Today I have partnered with The Baby Cubby to share my essentials for baby #2!  We loved so many of the products that we registered for and I posted about here, here, and here.  While we plan to use those same products as E moves towards more toddler items, there are items that we will have to repurchase because we will need two or I just didn’t know about before E!  The thing I love the most about The Baby Cubby is that they are more than just a store or even just a registry site, they handpick items that mamas have tried and tested and are the very best out there.  Almost every brand that I love is available on The Baby Cubby AND they price match for you!!!  You can read more about them here!  Below is a list of what we are planning to purchase for baby #2 who is due to arrive in just 3.5 months!

  1. It’s double stroller time!!  We loved our Britax Travel System with E!  There’s also a second seat attachment that might make for an lightweight option!
  2. The Ollie Swaddle  we have heard miracle stories about this swaddle and we were definitely newbs at swaddling with E.  This swaddle is meant to grow with baby and it has easy access at the bottom for changes!  Can’t wait to try it out!
  3. Bannor Toys Rattle  We had tons of Bannor Toys teethers for E and she loved the little rings on them so I’m thinking the new babe needs a rattle version!
  4. You know my girl is gonna have her own little collection of Freshly Picked Moccasins.   Read more about my love of these shoes here and basically every post. ever.
  5. Skip Hop Diaper Backpack  I am definitely thinking we need a backpack for baby #2.  We had this bag for E and we loved it, but I need both hands for 2 under 2.  I also love this backpack option (Gems of Giverny color) because I have heard a zip opening is key so everything doesn’t fall out?
  6. We love Tubby Todd!  And now they have a Mama Line!  I will be throwing this freshening spray in my diaper bag on the regular so I don’t smell like baby vomit all of the time.  Read more on my love of Tubby Todd here!
  7. Loved By Sophia Claire Pacifier Clips we didn’t really use any clips with E and honestly I can’t think of why?  Really would have saved us some stressful moments frantically searching for that bink.  On the floor of a restaurant.
  8. Speaking of binks.  We gotta come up with a plan.  We really want to keep E’s pacifier usage to a minimum which is already hard with the teething, sicknesses, and the fact that she sees other kids at daycare with them.  But now she will have a permanent person in the house that will have it constantly, especially at the beginning.  SO, our plan is to maybe use different pacifiers that we know E doesn’t like (because they don’t look like hers).  We have heard great things about these Natursutten Pacifiers and are excited to give them a try!
  9. Little Unicorn Cotton Quilt.  We are going to have to get all new blankets for baby as E has officially claimed all of the blankets in the house, even ones we set aside for other babies because no way one baby would need so many blankets. Yeah.  No guarantee she won’t also claim these (I mean who wouldn’t–they are SO cute!), but eventually we will have to have separate blankets that are each of the girls.  I also love this Little Unicorn Lemon Swaddle.  Well, really just anything Little Unicorn makes.  So good.
  10. And of course baby girl is going to need her own baby book!  We loved the one we had for E so going with the same one again!

What else do we need when we have two?!  I was having way too much fun building my list of items–really made it feel real!  We are getting close here people!  3.5 months!
Hope you all have a great weekend!
Erin
